"Vuoristo" Rug
Product Design
2022
A rug design translating landscape and topography into a tactile, sculptural surface defined by variation, texture and material expression.
Project
Vuoristo (Mountains) is inspired by natural landscapes, translating mountain forms into an asymmetrical surface pattern built through variations in pile height. The shifting structure creates a layered and sculptural texture, where changes in yarn length and density define both visual rhythm and material depth.
Hand-knotted from natural, undyed wool, the rug emphasises a raw and tactile material expression. The restrained palette allows texture and structure to define the visual identity of the piece.
Developed in collaboration with artisans in Ethiopia, the project combines traditional craftsmanship with a contemporary design approach. The rug is available in both knotted and woven variations, with subtle tonal differences based on natural wool.
